Pansies bloom through winter and the following spring, but you might be wondering when to plant them.
Panchos fill the backyard with color during the season. Pansies are popular for their short-lived nature. The flowers are marked in the center and look like faces.
“An enormous range of flower colors and variations includes blue, mauve, pink, purple, red, orange, yellow, and white, they’re often bicolored and tricolored with a mixture of shades too,” says Rachel Crow, a gardening expert. In winter, when little else is in bloom, pansies are particularly useful. If you would like to know when to plant pansies, read on!
Pansies can actually be planted in cooler spring months as well as fall months. Ideally, pansies should be planted from late summer to early fall which will give the time to grow and bloom.
How to Plant Pansies
Although you can sow pansies directly, you will get more reliable results if you go undercover.
Spread the seeds thinly over the pots or trays of compost, covering them with a little compost or vermiculite. Put a lid on the tray, seal the pot in a clear plastic bag, and set the seeds on the windowsill.
Once the seedlings show through, remove the lid and grow them on until they are large enough to transfer to individual pots. If you want to start them off in your borders, sow in soil that has been raked to a fine tilth and cleared of roots, stones and weeds.
In the fall, plant pansies outside, avoiding areas where they have been growing previously, as the soil may contain leaf-spot fungus.
Planting Pansies in Pots
It is easy to add color to a patio or garden at this time of year by planting pansies in pots. One container display can make a big difference. One large pot can make a bigger impact than many small pots scattered around the place. You will be rewarded with months of color for around half an hour. Between March and May, garden centers and nurseries will have bright pansy plants.
If you want to avoid having to change the display every few weeks, look for plants that flower for several months. Pansies are an inexpensive way to pack color into pots and provide flowers all summer. Perennials, like pansies, can be planted out in the garden when they are no longer in the pot.
Where to Plant Pansies
Pansies are ideal for growing in pots, containers, window boxes and within planter box ideas, either massed in a pot alone or mixed with other plants.
They do best in the shade. Panchos can be used to make a display on their own or mixed with other flower bed ideas. They are a great option for filling bare patches in the backyard. As the bulbs grow through and between the flowers, they make perfect partners.
